How is Assisted Living different from independent living?

Assisted living provides a more supportive environment than independent living, while still offering its residents independence to match their capabilities. Assisted Living offers assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming and toileting as well as monitoring medications, arranging medical appointments and providing transportation.

Who owns the Mark Wentworth Home?

The Mark Wentworth Home is an independent nonprofit, charitable foundation run by a Board of Trustees made up of citizens from the community.

Do I have to sign a long-term contract to become a resident?

No. The Mark Wentworth Home is a rental community, and residency is on a month-by-month basis. You do not have to purchase your residence nor do you have to sign a long-term lease.

How are the fees for residence determined, and will they increase?

The monthly Basic Fee includes three meals a day plus snacks, routine maintenance, housekeeping, utilities, basic cable TV and 24 hour staffing. Basic Fees are generally reviewed annually and may increase 4-7% or according to the rate of inflation. A 30 day written notice will be provided before any change is made in the Basic Fees. In addition, you may require a Level of Care Service Plan, which is determined by an initial assessment and reviewed routinely.

Do you provide local transportation?

The Mark Wentworth Home provides scheduled transportation to local destinations and appointments through the Wentworth Connections Transportation Program.

May I bring my car?

Yes. We offer assigned parking and do our best to provide you with a reserved space. In addition our maintenance will provide snow removal for your car in the winter months.

Do I keep my local physician?

Yes, you may.  Residents of the Home are required to have a local primary care physician.  If you are from out-of-state we will be happy to suggest some local physicians. We are located near Portsmouth Regional Hospital and within close proximity to York Hospital in Maine.

Can I control the temperature of my apartment?

Yes, each apartment and semi-private room has individual controls for air conditioning and heat.

Do I bring my own furnishings?

Yes, you are encouraged to bring as many of your own belongings as possible. We want you to feel at home. During your admission we will provide you with a floor plan so you can plan what you would like to bring, and will help you to identify qualified movers.  Residents of Garden Place are able to make use of a set of furnishings that come standard in each room, if they choose.

May I bring my pet?

The Home will allow pets who are able to be cared for independently by Residents residing in the Wentworth Place suites. Our policy is to maintain a safe and clean environment for all of our residents. If a pet is causing a problem for the staff or other residents, its owner will be asked to find it alternate housing. Unfortunately, we can not accept dogs, nor are pets permitted to reside in Garden Place.

How many rooms are there, and are the rooms private or semi-private?

Wentworth Place offers 48 suites in various sizes ranging from one-room studios to large one-bedroom layouts that can accommodate singles and couples.  Garden Place offers accomodations for 19 residents, and features 3 private rooms, and 8 companion rooms.

Are you Medicaid or Medicare certified?

The Mark Wentworth Home does not participate in Medicare or Medicaid. 

What is the staff ratio?

The Mark Wentworth Home's care providers are on duty and overseen by a Registered Nurse 24-hours a day.  Wentworth Place offers an average ratio of 1 LNA per 12 Residents.  Garden Place is staffed with an average ratio of 1 LNA per 7 Residents.

What are the visiting hours?

The Mark Wentworth Home is a 24-hour a day community. We only ask that visiting is within reason and respects the other members of our community.

Can I take my loved one out for a visit/trip? What about overnight?

Certainly! It is our mission for our residents to live an active and engaged live. We welcome the opportunity for them to participate in their lives as they had done at home.

Is there an Alzheimer's Care/locked Dementia Unit?

Garden Place offers a specialized setting specifically for residents with early on-set Alzheimer's disease or dementia, who are at risk for wandering and could benefit from a therapeutic approach to memory care. We believe our intimate community is the right size to be engaging and yet not over-stimulating. Doors to the floor are locked for the safety of residents who wander and a series of enrichment programs are offered throughout the day to enhance the memory of life skills and social enjoyment.
